  21. Without having a solution to your problem, are you certain that the remote 
  22. modem that you are connecting to has the same kind of compression code 
  23. available (common ones are MNP5 and V42bis - V42 is error correction) *and 
  24. enabled*?

  26. Obviously, both ends have to agree on how they will talk to each other
